Heel Spurs
An abnormal bone growth (calcium deposit) usually developing at the attachment point of the plantar fascia to the heel bone. The heel bone is the largest and hardest bone in the foot and is subject to large amounts of pressure and shock. Heel spurs can cause extreme pain at the bottom of the heel.
Cause
Heel spurs develop as an abnormal growth at the heel bone due to calcium deposits that form where the plantar fascia pulls away from the heel bone. Poor foot mechanics and ongoing plantar fasciitis contribute to the inflammation and the body then tries to heal which includes bone growth at the site of inflammation.
Treatment and Prevention
Surgical intervention can remove the spur and proper treatment also involves determining the cause. Correcting poor foot biomechanics with proper foot orthotics, stretching exercises, losing weight, wearing proper shoes with heel cushioning or gel heel cups are all ways to relieve pain and reduce shock. If the problem persists consult your foot doctor.
